They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away; I also say a regular read kicks ignorance away. It is very worrying to find graduates from tertiary institutions rendered almost useless after they leave the walls of their campuses.
Mostly because all we ever learn are theories, their proponents and their flaws and hardly never about hands-on practice. Students sweat to learn all that they are taught in school and come out with just book knowledge-their fingertips as fresh as a baby’s (with no experience).
We are a long way off trying to save the situation; because that is how our educational system has been since the days of old. So it is up to us students, to educate ourselves so as to become relevant to our society whenever the school gates close behind us.
Thanks to (or should I say no thanks) to video games and unproductive programs on TV, kids of today hardly gather any knowledge apart from what is offered them in class. All they pick up from TV is foreign fantasies about how one’s love story should unfold-like a fairy tale.
We are living in an era where no one has to tell you to learn all you can when you can. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a textbook recommended by a teacher. Strive to learn something about anything so you don’t feel lost when found in the midst of intellectuals who are talking about a subject out of your range of expertise.
And if you’re a lover of TV series, just don’t watch so as to able to narrate to someone else; you could pick a great collection of vocabulary and learn how all the sciences are applied in daily life. Read a good book, watch something worthwhile and add value to your life.
The world is racing fast-your teachers may not be able to catch up but you have to since your life is now about to begin.
