Let’s Grow Up!

No one has to spell it out that the state of the nation is in trouble (from all angles); and it is quite obvious that the future does not promise much hope either. Professors in our lecture halls keep telling us that we (the youth) are the future of this country but how many of us have actually thought about it?

The years are passing us by and we are not getting any younger. Sooner than later, it would be our turn to take over the wheels of management; not just over our personal lives but over the affairs of the state and its agencies. How many of us are actually looking forward to that?

It is amazing to find out what interests the youth these days. You overhear people’s conversations in lecture halls or in shuttles and all they talk about the latest fashion trend or some entertainment gossip. When matters of current affairs come up, it seems the news is from outer space. Most of us have little, next-to-no knowledge about what is going on around us. The level of reasoning can be a shock sometimes too. And I ask myself, who is going to be our Minister of Information or Finance in the next five years?

I have nothing against chatting about fashion or entertainment; they are useful in whiling away the time to de-stress ourselves but as tertiary students, we should begin to reason and analyze issues like adults. Soon, what seems important to us will be nothing but trivialities especially when we leave the four walls of our campuses. Our parents are spending large sums of money to get us educated so that when it is our turn to do something for our country, they can proudly say it was all worth it.

Life may seem all fun now but there is more work to be done and it starts right now before we get out into the real world. The earlier we brace ourselves for the task, the better we can serve our beloved country when the mantle is handed over to us.
