The political CD by virtue of our student democracy ideology has been inserted into the system. People ready to do the dance are being beckoned to the dance floor. Some started dancing before the actual start of the music. A premusic dance they do to attract the attention of many on campus, KNUST.
Political bells are tolling from departments, colleges and halls. With the bigger one being the highly anticipated SRC elections. Candidates and aspirants canonizing themselvesas the best for the job. ‘One job, too many people’. Lest i forget,it is also a time for fashion show.
They dress very neatly to impress everybody on campus. They become our friends out of nowhere, they visit our rooms, chat heartily with us as though we have been friends since infancy. The female aspirants are more interesting to watch. They say the hi’s and hello’s to virtually everybody on campus.
Do ask for a simple hug and they will cling to you for minutes. Go to rooms and students are busily arguing about the candidates. Competence for the job takes 20 and 80 goes to what is termed ‘freshness’ on campus. They move in massive political entourages made of students politically crafted as models, some with hired cars and heavily financed.
It is high time we tell them that we are tired of all of them and we know some of them too well. We ate ‘gobe’ and drank ‘sharp brain’ with them. We know how badly they fared in simple intellectual discourses,we know they are not as beautiful or handsome as they present themselves to as now, as though they know every problem bothering the students and would solve them in the twinkling of an eye.
They are not magicians. Where were they when students were crying for help in difficult times? They kept mute and we endured only to surface and tell us they want to lead us. Anyway,we know they are also in to stuff their pockets with our money.
Too many questions need to be asked. The more I probe the less answers I get. Are these people really qualified for the job? Can their competence be interrogated in the bigger picture? Do they have what it takes to take the tough decisions when need be? Have they been able to take a single important decision in their own lives to affect the masses positively in the long run? How money conscious are they? How avaricious are they?
Can they do anything at all without moneyand finally do they look like people who are really worthy to represent guys of our caliber so that we donot end up being mocked at by sister tertiary institutions.
As they come around telling you the sweet but very infeasible policies in the name of politics and give you the little political souvenirs and over humble themselves more than Christ would do. Remember that the onus lies on you and me to make the right choice and decision today so that we change the status quo of student politics and make a positive impact on our generation whiles we are here today.
Fellow comrades, please do remember that we are passing through the walls of this university as undergraduates but once. It is therefore important that we take serious measures to right the wrongs of previous administrations and not settle for these sorts of mediocre leaders.
