Why Virgins are Fast Becoming Endangered Species

“I have not done it before.” The statement that far beats any other in eliciting responses of surprise. And shockingly, an awful amount of teasing and jest. The plight of a virgin in today’s world.

The medieval age might have prioritized them as the peak of piety. Certain cultural dictates may still portray them as the hallmark of virtue. They were the pride of their families; the proof that an household is of impeccable character. Holy books extol them. The creme de la creme would kill for them. All things were almost always to the advantage of the virgin. One that has decided to elude himself/herself of the pleasures that the body has been instinctively wired to explore and enjoy.

An endangered (EN) species is said to be one which has been categorised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as likely to become extinct. To be out of existence. And like other endangered species such as addax, red wolves and black rhinos, the reinforcement of their existence is usually so minuscule that they become victims of the hunters’ cruelty and persecution.

For the sake of this piece, I’ll define a virgin as one biologically mature but hasn’t experienced the pleasures that coitus alone gives (not via other routes such as the oral or anal territories. Yea, I know this is controversial too. lol). So, let’s visit why these rare ones have become the “most haunted…. and hunted”.

They are who we’d like to be but can’t.

I recently came across a quote that reads “sometimes people try to expose what’s wrong with you because they can’t handle what’s right about you.” This captures what we do when we find people that seem to be the models of perfection that we aren’t.

Let’s admit it… We are jealous!

We tease them with an underlying feeling of inferiority that sure results into a covert form of jealousy. This jealousy surfaces in the form of jabs and constant teasing that we employ so as to “cope” with our complex. Their innocence scares us. Their discipline makes us look weak. Right? Definitely. Chai! We are jealous! Really sorry to be though.

We are reminded of what we have lost.

Lost a particular object before… and you see another exact one elsewhere? That feeling right. I get. Noone likes to be reminded of any loss no matter its form. Something we once had… Something so precious that we haven’t forgotten how we gave it away (some stolen), to whom, when and where. Yea right, you know it’s precious. Losing something as priceless as that does have its effects.

Misery loves company.

I kinda think (and know) that most of us still feel miserable about losing it, and much more after subsequent acts. If they aren’t feeling what we feel, then there is no crime in getting them to have a bite of the misery-laden apple. Basic human defects activated.

Certain products won’t sell.

This is perhaps a funny perspective but legit. A valid one at that. The economic value of virginity is a scary prospect to certain companies such as those in the health industry with a bias for contraceptives. What will happen to condoms or aftermorning pills if a vast majority of us have decided to remain virgins? Virgins are probably likely not to consume products such as alcohol and other drugs that may predispose them to the “conjugal action”. What happens to the profit margins of companies like Heineken or Rothmans? Please don’t forget to add clubs and stripper joints too.

The inventiveness of media and communications.

The media thanks to its constant innovation is making sex almost impossible to avoid. Things that you get to see only when you peep through porous keyholes are accessible online. For FREE! Pornography, sexting, erotic call centres, phone sex and all sorts are effective predisposing factors to getting the “undones” to desire the real thing. This pressure can be so much so that musical videos and even cartoons can be so potent.

I must also add that virginity has no gender. Maybe it can be proven or not, you owe it to Whosoever you believe in, yourself, family and a society that isn’t deserving of it. If you still are, you are rare. Please keep it! They want to be like you but won’t tell.
