My take on the GAAS (KNUST) dues for 2012/2013

I want to introduce the 2012/2013 batch of Ghana Association of Students in Agriculture and Related Sciences (GAAS) executives to God.

This is very important because the best way of arresting moral decadence is to introduce God to youngsters. I write to register my discomfort in the proposed dues because, in a contemporary society such as ours, we must always and forever stand for the right thing at all times.

The rate at which extortion and bullying is perpetrated in the faculty has attained enough maturity to attract feedback in order to pre-empt any heads from rolling. I have no doubt that association dues are important ingredients for a successful administration and an increased in these dues is acceptable, especially in this economy of dollar bleed. But my worry is the unjustified manner at which these dues are increased.

Last year, against our wish, we were coerced to pay a total sum of GHȻ 46.90. Even though some of us used ourselves as conduit to channel the displeasure of such payments, unfortunately, the executives saw us as rebels who were not interested in the progress of the faculty. Now, to the issue of this year’s dues as proposed by the Asabre-led administration, a total sum of GHȻ 65.50 is about to be extorted from us. The question is what has provoked this high increment. To me, an upward increased of GHȻ18.6 is untenable and the good people of GAAS should have value for money and never again should we be treated with such disdain. Worse of all, they have woefully refused to publish the breakdown of the amount and this just confirmed my instincts that indeed, thinking is optional and some people just think apparently below the belt.

In my capacity as a legitimate member of this association, I am making a passionate and humble appeal to the executives to halt all financial commitments they are making to any organization in a way of contracts or what so ever to void payment of judgment debts until an agreement is reached as to the agreed amount.

I want the executives to take the dues proposed by SOCIOSO as a case study. SOCIOSO proposed GHȻ 57.00 and GHȻ55.00 for freshers and continuing students respectfully for the whole academic year and this amount includes faculty, departmental and even college dues. How then do you justify your claim for charging GHȻ 65.50 just for faculty dues?

The executives, as a matter of urgency must come out with the breakdown and must comfort to the university’s status on dues because it outlines a particular threshold to charge.

In conclusion, I want to thank the executives even as they make up their minds to review the amount downwards. The evidence of overnight rainfalls is a wet ground in the morning, stop incubating corruption and do the right thing, Jesus is coming soon.
