Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) on Thursday launched a Tablet Computer to promote teaching and learning on its campuses.

The computer dubbed: “The Campus Companion,” is a tool created to integrate technology into the pedagogical process to enable students and lectures to collaborate effectively, locally, and remotely anywhere and anytime.

The tablet comes in two versions, the Gazer, which incorporate a SIM for Mobile telephony and data access, which runs on Google’s Android 2.3.3. OS (Gingerbread) and  Starlight, which  works with an external dongle and runs on Google’s Android 4.0.4 OS (IceCreamSandwich).

The tweo devices are 10 inches in size.

Professor Walter S. Alhassan, Chairman of the GTUC Council said the Campus Companion was designed with the principal aim of facilitating the creation of content and digitisation from local sources and lecturing tools which enable webcasting of courseware to one or many students locally and remotely.

He  said the GTUC in its bid to ensure the vision of being the centre of excellence is providing training in technology oriented education to meet the needs of Ghana and the West African sub-region.

Dr Osei K. Darkwa, President of GTUC said the introduction of the Campus Companion is to help shift the educational roadmap of the College and students in Ghana and the sub-region towards the GTUC direction.

Dr Samuel Somuah, Head, IT Directorate at the University of Ghana noted: “If Africa does not move on the technological direction that the GTUC is moving, we will continue to be slaves in the technological world.”

The programme was sponsored by Ecobank Ghana Limited, Bank of Africa Ghana Limited, Zenith Bank Ghana Limited and Universal Pension Master Trust Limited.
