The Teachers and Education Workers Union is threatening a strike that is likely to further cripple activity on the campuses of the country’s public universities.
Members of TEWU have started wearing red armbands to warn of the impending action over their grievances regarding their migration onto the single spine pay policy.
General Secretary, Mohammed Bogobiri, says they will resort to a full blown strike if the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission fails to favorably deal with their concerns within one week.
“The Union submitted 22 classes to be considered for the payment of the 15 per cent premium; Fair Wages has accepted to consider only 11 out of the 22; Fair Wages said that we should justify why we want them to consider the other 11 for payment; we sent a reminder [but] they didn’t even acknowledge [receipt] of the reminder,” he stated.
Meanwhile an ongoing strike by university administrators also over single spine grievances has already brought work on the campuses to a standstill.
Deputy Registrar at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Vincent Ankah Lomotey, says they are struggling with just a month to the release of results of Senior High school leavers.
