The National Labour Commission has declared as illegal, the strike embarked upon by the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Ghana Education Service.

TEWU declared a nationwide strike on Monday over reservations over their migration onto the Single Spine pay policy.

The Executive Secretary of the NLC, Breko Boadu however told Citi News TEWU did not follow due process in communicating their grievances.

He said “nobody has notified the Commission that negotiations have broken down for us to intervene. So they did not notify the Commission that they were giving any alternatives.”

Mr. Boadu further explained that “the law clearly spells out how to embark on a strike that you should notify the Commission therefore the strike is very illegal.”

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Earl Ankrah also told Citi News the Commission cannot grant the request of TEWU since it will distort the pay administration system.

“We granted part of their request for them in all fairness but realized that we couldn’t give them the market premium because it is meant for a particular set of skills; that is, those strictly teaching so we cannot grant their request and they have already been told”, said Earl Ankrah.

But the National President of TEWU, Peter Lumor insists his members will not back down.
