Angry St. John’s SHS students set school ablaze

Students at the St. John’s Senior High School at Nandom in the Upper West Region have destroyed several properties belonging to the school and set its administration block on fire, Thursday night.

Their action follows what they say are attempts by the school authority to prevent them from sitting next year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Reports by Joy News correspondent at Radio Freed, Mohammed Alhassan, indicate school authorities decided to organize a mock exam for the students after the school’s poor performance at the 2013/2014 exams.

The idea was that students who pass the mock exams will then be allowed to sit the external exams.

But two teachers in the school reportedly instigated the students to react against the decision.

Headmaster of the school, on hearing the yet-to-be identified teachers’ action, reported them to the Assistant Education Director in the region and asked that immediate action be taken against them.

One of the teachers was subsequently issued with a warning letter, reports say.

There is currently security presence at the school while some students have been arrested by the police to assist in investigations.
