The Ghana National Service Scheme has handed over 10,000 bags of maize to Senior High Schools in Ashanti and the Brong-Ahafo regions.
The handing over took place in Ejura where the Minister of Education; Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Mr. Enoch Cobbinah, the out-going Ashanti Regional Minister; and the Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Vincent Senam Kuagbenu addressed the gathering.
Mr. Senam Kuagbenu said the scheme was aimed to extend the agric projects to cover all the ten regions – currently it has agric projects in seven regions.
He said it was heart-warming that service personnel across the country had embraced the Scheme’s Agric project, which had become the bulwark of its success story.
He said the Scheme had provided employment opportunities for community volunteers in the catchments of the projects and that had brought a lot of relief to hitherto unemployed youth.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman commended the National Service Scheme for the agric projects, which she said had brought relief to Senior High schools.
She called for collaboration with the management of the Scheme in several areas where they could aid the development process, adding that the Scheme had amply demonstrated that when given the necessary resources it would make significant achievements.
The Ashanti Regional President of Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Reverend Collins Oppong- Anokye on-behalf of SHSs, expressed appreciation to the Scheme for the annual gesture.
He said the Scheme could have sold the maize in the open market where it would earn more profits instead of giving them to the schools at a highly subsidized price.
