Africa Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is well noted for its elegant beauty pageant shows. Miss KNUST had been the name of the contest that is held during their hall week every year but from 2013/2014 Academic Year, the name was changed to Domites’ Pearl.

Miss Angela Yayra Abletor (Angie), an 18yr-old Tourism student, was crowned the winner of the first edition of Domites’ Pearl which was held at the forecourt of Africa Hall on Friday, March 7, 2014.

Angie is an old student of University Practice Senior High School, Cape Coast.

In a phone interview with myJCR News, she expressed joy and excitement and was full of thanks to all those who supported her.

Angie disclosed exclusively to myJCR News that this is the first time she has participated in a beauty contest and though she was confident and was ready to bring out her best during the show, she thought the best she could get was to be in the final three but not to be crowned the winner.

According to her, she was excited when the CEO of myJCR.com, Katakyie HiLary, who was among the panel of judges declared her as the Domites’ Pearl. “I was so happy and full of joy when my name was mentioned. I believe the judges saw something greater in me than I thought. I am so honoured and humbled.” she said.

Tracy was the 1st Runner Up, Naomi (Mimi) took the 3rd Position, and to the surprise of many who were present, Elsie placed 4th despite her great display of talent through Acting and her unique eloquence.

When myJCR News asked Angie (the Winner) of her opinion on the contestants who placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, she said, “I was very much surprised when Elsie placed 4th. Honestly, I think Elsie performed better than me and thus I expected to see her among the first three at least. She is talented, eloquent and delivered her speech perfectly.”

“I am not saying the judges were not fair because there were four judges who scored independently. Probably what I used to evaluate was different from the guidelines they used to select the winners. Also, the total scores were based on performance for the night only but on number of coupons a contestant was able to sell. I sold a lot of coupons”, she continued.

The first Domites’ Pearl also indicated during the phone interview with myJCR News that if she was a judge for the show, she would have crowned Elsie as the winner and place Mimi and Tracy at the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

Angela thanked the judges for Domites’ Pearl 2014 and everyone who bought her coupons to support her. She also thanked those who couldn’t buy her coupons but came to support her during the show. She specially thanked all Tourism students of KNUST for their massive support and for making her feel at home.

“I would like to tell the people who may think Angie will become proud and “kyekyes” because she has been crowned a beauty queen that I will remain the Angie they know. I only contested to enable me gain exposure, build my confidence, and learn to relate to people…thats all. I am still Angie”, she indicated.

She promised to take this opportunity to secure ceiling fans for rooms in Africa Hall as her project because rooms in the Hall are not conducive to live in at all. There are no fans in the rooms thus sometimes the rooms become very hot.

This story won’t be complete if we don’t hilarious display by Continentals of Unity Hall during the event. They came in their numbers with their President, Mr. Charles Opoku Duah, to support the Domites as expected. There was also a great spoken word performance by Psalm One.

Although the event started very late, around 11pm, and ended at 3:00am, the attendance was massive and the overall performance by contestants was very impressive. Dj Quest of Focus Fm was behind the console. Domites’ Pearl 2014 was proudly supported by myJCR.com.
