On the 16th day of October 1968, a hall was built in Africa. This hall, Unity Hall, was built to reflect the collection of good visions of Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Nyere Julius of Tanzania of the time of formation of the organization of Africa unity and also as a sign of peace and unity of the African countries.
This hall happens to be the largest male hall in the sub-Sahara region. Its members are called Continentals.
Just after the second roundabout from the main entrance of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is the magnificent edifice nicknamed ‘the Twin Tower.’
Unity Hall is now 46 years old. The grand durbar took place at the hall’s forecourt which brought lots of people to the scene. To mention few of these people are the President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), the President of their rival hall (University Hall a.k.a. Katanga), President of Africa Hall and other invited student leaders.
Several speeches were given. The SRC President in his speech reminded residents of the hall, “Whatever you do, whether you are on the first or eighth floor affects the next door neighbour.” He therefore urged students to be meticulous in whatever they do because it’s their actions that raise the name of the hall and the university as a whole.
At 46 years, Unity Hall can boast of many things including infrastructures and human resources. The former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, the VC of the University, Prof. W. O. Ellis are all Continentals.
The hall remains the ONLY hall in Ghana that supplies electricity to residents 24/7. Load shedding or no load shedding…Continentals have light.
Indeed Continentals have come a long way.
myJCR.com wishes all PAWAFUL Continentals a Happy Birthday.
