Students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) residing at the Crystal Rose Hostel (Hamilton Hall) situated in Kentinkrono (Kumasi) will report to school tomorrow to see their hostel burnt.
The hostel which is situated near Georgia Hostel and SSNIT (GAZZA) Hostels caught fire in the late afternoon of Thursday, January 9, 2014.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. At the time of visit of myJCR KNUST Team, Ghana Fire Service personnel were busy fighting fire which had already damaged the last floor of the hostel. No casualties have been reported so far.
The students leadership of the KNUST issued the following notice hours after the unfortunate fire outbreak:
From the deepest confines our heart, the entire body of the KNUST SRC expresses its profound bitterness and condolence to the casualties involved in the fire outbreak at the Crystal Rose Hostel (Hamilton Hall). “God knows best”. With all manner of stern decorum, we pray to students in other hostels to help accommodate our brothers and sisters who by no fault of theirs have unexpectedly lost their valuable belongings and properties.
The SRC beseeches all tenants of the hostel not to make this a reason for their stay at home but rather avail themselves as school reopens on the 10th day of January, whilst the SRC puts in place strategic measures to salvage this painful misfortune. This is in order not to create any academic lapses.
At the moment, the fire service personnel are trying everything under their sleeves to halt this unbearable misfortune. We need your prayers for the affected victims. Thank you. Sincerely, Caleb Fugah (SRC President), Kofi Kyei Richard (Speaker of Parliament), Paul Adanu Worlanyo (NUGS President), and the entire SRC.
The Legon SRC President, Eric Edem Agbana, on behalf of the Students Representative Council of University of Ghana (Legon) has also expressed deep sympathies to the entire student body of KNUST, particularly, the Residents of Crystal Rose Hostel (Hamilton Hall) for the unfortunate fire outbreak that claimed students’ invaluable properties.
He wrote on his Facebook wall, “We in the University of Ghana SRC are extremely saddened by this accident. We stand, as we have done always, in solidarity with The entire student body of KNUST and the SRC in this very difficult moment and we pledge our unflinching willingness to readily help in anyway possible to alleviate the pain of the disaster. God knows best. We ask that indeed He grants you the courage to weather the storm.”
