Come ending of March, 2014, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology could become the centre of attraction in Kumasi.
This is because certain personalities of international repute but of Ghanaian origin have been billed to honour this year’s edition of the Vice Chancellor’s awards.
Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan and Former President, Jerry Rawlings are among some of the dignitaries invited for the event.
This was revealed by the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Leadership Corner on FOCUS FM last Sunday.
Public Relations Officer of the Union, Edem Ativor, says all is in place to welcome these global icons to the garden city to grace the awards ceremony come ending of March.
The event powered by the NUGS-KNUST is meant to acknowledge and celebrate the works and efforts of students in various fields of endeavours on campus.
The usually colourful event awards persons from both academic and non-academic areas in the university circle.
Many students have been inspired to affect the lives of students one way or the other by creating businesses and developing very imperative applications among others because of the annual awards.
Over the years, nomination forms are sent around to various halls, hostels and departments for students to nominate persons who have done exploits during the academic year.
However, as with every award ceremony in Ghana, it has come under a lot of criticisms and allegations have often been leveled against officials of being biased.
But president of NUGS, Paul Worlanyo explained this year’s event will be very memorable and as transparent as ever.
Students have welcomed the idea of such personalities coming on campus but have raised eyebrows of the amount of money to be involved and the need for such persons.
