A third year economist student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Duke Sasu Aaron has been adjudged the best public speaker in Africa.

Duke Sasu who is also the president of the KNUST team won the prestigious award contested by over five hundred students from across fifty African countries.

He is the first student from KNUST to have won the award since the inception of the Pan African Public Speaking competition in 2007.

Participants had to write up their own speeches on a given topic within three minutes and deliver afterwards.

The competition went through same process for three different stages.

KNUST presented eight students, Islamic University presented two whiles the University of Ghana had three representatives.

Majority of the African contingent could only go as far as the second round leaving only four KNUST members scaling to the last stage.

The beautifully written and carefully arranged speeches were perfectly delivered on point during the final stages of the competition making it difficult to judge sitting in the audience.

But at the end of the fiercely contested competition, the remaining four participants from the KNUST team deservedly stole the competition as three took the first three top slots while one getting an outstanding award.

Leading by example, Duke Sasu became the first person outside Southern Africa to have been decorated as the best public speaker in Africa. As part of the competition, participants were also allowed to judge in certain stages of the competition.

Another member of the team, Micheal Sam Vidza was adjudged the second best adjudicator in that competition.

The other two members of the team namely Isaac Nyamekye Boakye, second year actuarial science and Irene Berengar Duku, second year English student placed second and third respectively.

The annual event is organized as part of the pan African inter-university debate competition among different African universities.
This year’s competition was staged in Calabar, Nigeria.
