Good day folks, there is going to be a peaceful demonstration coming up this Friday, 28th February, 2014.
We have use dialogue, negotiations and all other diplomatic measures but we are not yielding the needed results.
I was nurtured in home where we discipline with carrots and sticks,if carrots were finished we apply some sticks.
This decision was taken after series of meeting with hostels management and the SRC came to a consensus to grade and set range for prices.
The percentage was between 10-30% increments but this same management went against the agreement and some have employed middlemen known as Hostel Placement System (HPS) to dupe and extort innocent students. In stead of the agreed 10-30% it is now 60-90% increments which is preposterous.
The SRC has already sent a letter to the VC concerning GUSS Hostel and we are watching their price ceiling. The target group of this demonstration is Hostel Management as long as your prices are exorbitant coupled with poor security.
We are aware of the fact that these are private entities coupled with the degrading economic standing of our nation but these prices are unacceptable .We seek for the media attention for a public outcry.
This demonstration is peaceful not compulsory and the end result is aimed at a reduction in prices.
We are lucky to have our chancellor being the custodian of these hostel lands, the Ghana Tenancy Law which protects tenant is available as well as the customer protection agency. This could make Build Operate and Transfer policy a reality.
I believe something can be done, I do not know of your choice left but it is better trying than to embrace this as fate. I envision a KNUST where hostels and security challenges are things of the past.
My sneakers are ready and I am ever ready to hit the road.
Call this populism or unnecessary but there is no harm in utilising our options.
Change is hard,it is difficult but we can’t afford to be stagnant. We are at the brink.
