KNUST is somewhat beginning to live up to their name as a technology university as it has started injecting some technology into various parts of the schools operations. The trend started two years ago by migrating the students’ registration processes from the usually tedious manual way onto biometric.
The electioneering processes in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology will be entering into a new phase as it veers into voting electronically.
This is because over the years, elections on KNUST campus have been characterized by different shades of controversies.
Between 2011 and 2013, most SRC elections have ended up in the court with issues of unfairness, cheating and rigging most discussed.
As a result, students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, come next year will be voting by electronic means to elect student leaders.
This is part of the ways to eliminate what school authorities describe as unnecessary malpractices and misunderstandings that engulf students’ elections every year.
The decision was revealed by the Dean of student in KNUST, Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daaku in an interview with FOCUS FM.
Speaking to FOCUS NEWS, some section of students have attributed these to what they say are unseen hands that doctor the results among other things.
But Dr. Owusu Darko believes the electronic voting is a sure way to curb this recurring situation.
As some students have embraced the decision, others are worried the new system when employed could expose the electioneering process to more malpractices.
However, the initiative is set to start with the Students Representative Council elections and subsequently to the various departments and colleges.
