Residents of communities around Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi have welcomed the establishment of a police post in the area.
They are however skeptical the facility will be able to address security challenges confronting them.
Students in private hostels at Ayeduase, Kotei, Boadi, and other communities are persistently attacked by armed robbers and other criminals.
This year alone, 127 robbery incidents in the area have been reported to the Manhyia Police Divisional Command.
Some students petitioned authorities for action before the Ashanti Regional Police Command inaugurated a police post provided by KNUST at Ayeduase.
Residents who spoke to FOCUS News however say the siting of the post in what they believe is less prone to crime could make little impact.
“The police men there are not enough and plus they have only one patrol vehicle. Because of that they delay at every alert of robbery attacks. This is encouraging more attacks especially at Kotei.
“For the patrol team they only ply the street and not the hostels. We are pleading that they enter where the hostels are situated and this can ward off the criminals,” the passionately said.
Meanwhile, Secretary of KNUST hostel providers, Alex Asiamah, has promised that owners are being compelled to employ security men to protect occupants.
