The Students Chaplaincy Council (SCC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has cancelled its regular end of semester joint service to avoid a planned demostration by some agrieved students against the Dean of Students of the Insitution, Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daaku.
The Dean of Students usually address students during the joint church services which involve most of the Christian groups on campus. The joint church service, organised by the SCC, is held at the beginning and ending of each semester.
Already, a demonstration against Dr. Owusu-Daaku by some residents of University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti) was held on Friday, April 25 for the Dean’s alleged interference in the affairs of students especially in relation to the just ended SRC elections.
The demonstrating students verbally petitioned the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. William Otto Ellis to call the Dean of Students to order.
Rumours on campus indicate another demonstration planned against the Dean of Students targeting Sunday’s joint service by the SCC. To reduce tension, the SCC has cancelled the scheduled joint service.
Exams start on Monday, April 28, 2014 and it is expected to reduce the tension on campus as most students will be focusing on graduating from the University or moving to the next academic year successfully.
