Scholarships awards for KNUST Engineering Students

The KNUST College of Engineering in collaboration with Baker Hughes, Vodafone Ghana, Genser Power Ghana Limited and Toyota Ghana Limited has held an awards ceremony for hardworking and deserving students. The ceremony is the first ever formal College Awards Ceremony to be held in the University. The objective of the awards is to encourage students of the College of Engineering to work hard.

Professor Abeeku Brew-Hammond, Director of the Energy Centre, represented the Provost of the College of Engineering during the event. In his welcome address, Professor Brew-Hammond said that he was glad that such an award had been put in place to acknowledge the contribution of hardworking students. He explained that the College had instituted three awards: Top Student, Excellent Student and Most Improved Student Awards. He also explained that the criteria for selection of awardees were set up by the individual companies in consultation with the College.

In all, thirty students – eighteen females and twelve

males – from the Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronic Engineering Departments were given awards. An award instituted by Professor Jonas Addai-Mensah of the University of Australia was also presented to the best Chemical Engineering student.

The Vodafone Ghana award which was worth ¢1500 each went to ten female students. The Barker Hughes award worth $9000 went to six female students, each student getting $1500. The Genser Power Ghana Limited award worth ¢9450 went to nine students at ¢1050 each, and the Toyota Ghana award also worth ¢2000 went to four Mechanical Engineering students.

A special category for needy students sponsored by Educational Pathway Scholarship worth $7200 was awarded to four students at $1800 each.

he Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis, in his address said the University over the years had made tremendous progress through the effort of corporate bodies and philanthropists who provided financial support and internship opportunities for the students. He thanked the companies for the scholarships and acknowledged the remarkable progress of the College of Engineering.
