Beginning next academic year, candidates for any position of the students representative council (SRC) in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology must have an average of sixty (60) and above. The move is a directive by the school to ensure student leaders are academically strong before taking up any SRC position which they say is difficult and time consuming.

It is also to massage the perennial issue of SRC leaders accumulating low averages at the end of their tenure. SRC executives over the years have had to bow in shame and hide as their colleague students walk up the academic podium during graduations to receive the graduation scroll.

For almost five successive years, SRC executives especially the presidents have their results withheld, others amass countless trails whiles the lucky ones graduate with their heads buried in shame as they walk up for a lower or pass.

Even those in the upper class or first class sometimes end up sometimes in the lowest class on the academic ladder.

A situation that has raised many eyebrows on the magnitude of work supposed to be taking all the time of these students thereby resulting in such performances.
Year in year out, students complain bitterly about the many things these leaders leave office bragging about.

It has taken selfless students to sink deep and bring to fore some of the disgraceful deficits these executives leave behind after their term. The initiative was announced by the dean of student of the school, Dr. Kwaku Owusu Darko on FOCUS FM.

The decision which seems not to have gone down well with some section of students have drawn heavy lashing by especially student leaders. For them, a good leader cannot be determined with high academic grades and as such should not be measured with that.

They believe this could naturally relegate appropriate and better leaders to the aft consequently coiling many of such to their shells.

However, some students believe the decision by school authorities is a step in the best direction.

Current SRC President, Caleb Fugah told FOCUS FM he will ensure the initiative is well massaged so it doesn’t restrict potential leaders from emerging from the school.
