‘I have a dream, that one day, my four little children will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.’ In the quest to alleviate the ‘For Whites only’ barricade, Martin Luther King Junior uttered those words.
In similar vein, the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) also has got a dream. The caption, which is of Zulu descent, a promissory note to which all will fall heir.
A dream that is susceptible to a whooping five year span, ‘UMBONO 2020’, thriving on the wheels of gradualism between the years 2015 and 2020 after which it would be required to be renewed by the then SRC leadership.
What is UMBONO 2020?
‘It is a development plan which is being drafted by The SRC to guide execute more specific, attainable, measurable and time bound policies which would affect the life of each student in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’. Patrick Dapaah Kwaw, the Public Relations Officer of the SRC explained in an interview with “The BossLady” of myJCR.com.
‘This development plan is aimed at helping to identify the current gaps in the SRC and also to make more effective decisions pertaining to fund management and students’ organization. It would also serve as a continuous feedback from the students’ front to be able to ascertain the effectiveness of the SRC’s influence on their lives,’ he further elaborated.
The plan, when complete, would be passed through the appropriate channels including the SRC Parliament for consideration and approval and also the Residence Committee of the University for finalization.
An able team has been tasked with the role of conducting polls to solicit for the candid inputs and opinions of the student body in relation to the plan in its entirety. The team is expected to kick-start coming Wednesday, January 21, 2015.
