Authorities at the KNUST are assuring adequate arrangements to ensure students housed at the Unity Hall do not suffer inconveniences after fire gutted the facility.
Portions of the Block B of Unity Hall were on fire Wednesday afternoon, razing ten rooms which accommodate forty students. The cause of the fire which fortunately recorded no casualties is yet to be ascertained.
Students had to perch whiles others squat with friends throughout the semester when a similar incident occurred at a private hostel (Crystal Rose Hostel at Kentinkrono) weeks to start last academic year.
School reopens in three weeks, raising concerns the fire will increase accommodation challenges for some students of the University again.
But Registrar of the KNUST, Kobby Yebo-Okrah, says adequate measures will be put in place and that it won’t affect accommodation.
“We have a couple of weeks on our hand so the University will take steps to renovate and rehabilitate the place before the students report. We don’t anticipate that it’s going to affect the academic year. We have all the hydrants activated and working effectively that is why we could contain the fire,” he stated.
Fire Officer at KNUST Station, Francis Darko Kono, explains the difficulty in putting out the fire.
Amidst three tenders, they had to call for reinforcement from regional fire station after hours of fighting what seemed a fruitless battle.
Special fire tender with a long ladder from the regional station saved the situation from spreading to more rooms.
Meanwhile, a group of farmers occupying the facility for an annual general meeting have lost some property and are worried at the development.
