Telecommunication giants Vodafone Ghana have resolved to benefit all tertiary institutions in Ghana with their initiative of promoting innovation amongst students.
The company has established the first ever technology hub at the KNUST which seems to be promoting innovation in the school.
The hub offers an open space with uninterrupted internet access where students-entrepreneurs meet to develop innovative ideas.
Patronage of the place is high with over 100 students accessing the facility in day.
Amongst some inventions developed in the school through the initiative includes an application which facilitates the relay of information to mass population.
Vodafone partnered with KNUST to pilot the application and it has improved communication between authority and students tremendously.
Now the school’s agenda of running a paperless campus is more than realized as the Dean of students can reach the over 30,000 students in the school within a flash.
Just a year after establishment of the hub, CEO of Vodafone Haris Broumidis reveals there has been a huge demand for the initiative by other institutions.
“It is actually the first one and I can say that now there is more demand from other universities to do the same thing, not to only promote paperless communication on campuses but also to provide technology solutions to problems in the schools.”
“I am hopeful that through this hub the next big invention can come from Ghana, as I always say, why should here be the place where applications like “what Sapp” can’t be invented?” he asked.
Mr.Haris Broumidis visited the center ascertain development and also donated a cheque of 100,000 Ghana Cedis to KNUST for continuous improvement of the place.
He however urged stakeholders to put their hands on deck in pushing the innovation agenda forward in the country.
“Innovation is technological is created outside the strict cooperate boundaries and that academic institutions have their role to play so is policymakers and also private companies must support the agenda of pushing innovation forward.”
Meanwhile Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof Otoo Ellis is grateful for the initiative and the healthy partnership between the school and Vodafone. He however pledged his continuous support to Vodafone in their commitment to promote innovation in the school.
