The University of Ghana chapter of UTAG has registered its displeasure with some comments attributed to the Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana concerning the strike action embarked upon by the University Teacher Association some weeks ago.
In a letter addressed to the SRC signed by the Mr. Samuel N. Nkumbaan, secretary of the association, UTAG called on the SRC to render an unqualified apology to its outfit for describing members as ‘insensitive’ and ‘selfish’ on some media platforms in relation to the recent strike action.
According to UTAG, such utterances threatened the cordial student-lecturer relation that promotes efficiency in teaching and learning.

Dear Mr. President
SRC PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS ON THE UTAG STRIKE ACTION
I write on behalf of the UG-UTAG to express our displeasure with some of the comments attributed to you in the media regarding the current strike by UTAG.
You were heard on many media platforms describing UTAG members variously including that we were “insensitive” and “selfish” in relation to our recent strike action. You were also heard claiming credit for the decision by UTAG-UG to return to the classroom when in fact, you never engaged any UTAG member or the Executive in any discussion or negotiation. We wish to indicate to you in clear terms that your utterances and claims threaten the cordial student-lecturer relations that promote efficiency in teaching and learning. It certainly is clear that the same “selfish” and “insensitive” lecturers are the very people who produce privileged politicians, business executives and other functionaries, many of who turn around to negatively criticize their source of knowledge.
The fact must be stated that UTAG has duly discharged its duties to both Government and the University over the 2012/2013 academic year (Teaching, setting exams, supervision, grading graduating students etc). for which payment is sought, and we find your position more selfish in comparison to that of UTAG.
We are by this letter calling on you and your outfit to render an unqualified apology to UTAG in writing and via the media channels through which you have cast a slur on the image of UTAG and its members.
We look forward to your response and further action.
Thank you

Yours sincerely,
Samuel N. Nkumbaan
(UG-UTAG Secretary)
