The Soccer and basketball league competition is not something most Universities in Ghana can boast of, but the University of Ghana, aside its annual inter hall games, also holds an inter – hall soccer and basketball league. This year’s edition has seen 12 halls of residence battle it out on the field for pride, honour and the ultimate league trophy.

The basketball league which ended weeks earlier than the soccer league, saw defending champions Legon Hall chalk 27 points, trailing 6 points behind current league leaders Mensah Sarbah Hall, after losing two games against Sarbah Hall and second placed Akuafo Hall who currently have 30 points in their bag after the first round of the league.

The situation in the soccer league is pretty much different as the “Premier Hall” who are struggling to impose their authority in the basketball league, are rather dominating with a sound lead with 30 points after winning 10 games out of 11 and losing just once to second place Commonwealth hall.

The Vandals are the only side yet to lose a game in this year’s soccer league with 27 points to their advantage.

Meanwhile, the Farmer’s (Akuafo Hall) who happen to be the defending champions are finding it difficult this season after losing and drawing on two different occasions thus finding themselves in 3rd place with 23 points and 7 points behind the league leaders.

Surprisingly, GRASAG managed to secure 13 points and 3 wins finding themselves in 7th place on the table compared to a rather disappointing show last season.

The International Students Hostel, ISH also started this season on a good note by holding defending champions Akuafo Hall and the dethroned champions Mensah Sarbah Hall to drawn games with impressive 4 wins out of 11 games played.

They occupy the 5th position on the standings, a better feat compared to their outing last season by this time.

On the other hand, dethroned champions Mensah Sarbah Hall have begun this season on a rather poor note with three defeats and three draws and sit 4th on the table compared to their excellent start to last season which saw them top of the standings.

With 12 points behind league leader’s Legon Hall, they will have a tall mountain to climb if they really want to get their hands back on the trophy.

This season has recorded a total of 213 goals after 11 matches played with former Bechem United player Frederick Amankonaa, who plays for the Vandals scoring 17 of those goals making him the current goal king.

A participant of the MTN SOCCER ACADEMY season 4, Edmund Nana Kyei who happens to be the top scorer for the “Premier hall”, grabbed 11 of the 213 goals scored this season with the second top scorer of the league Seth Awudi of Akuafo Hall scoring 12 times.

We are yet to witness more goals and more drama with excellent display of skills next semester as the University of Ghana inter- hall soccer league resumes alongside the basketball league.
