Legon School of Agriculture holds maiden Open Day

The School of Agriculture of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, (CACS) of the University has recently organized its first Open Day on the theme ‘Strengthening Agricultural Development in Ghana through Quality Higher Education’. The objective of the programme was to sensitize students from second-cycle institutions on the admission requirements and career prospects for pursuing a degree in Agriculture.

In his welcome address, the Provost of CACS, Professor S. K. Offei who chaired the event gave a brief overview of the College. He said the programme was important since it was expected to encourage more Agricultural Science students at the Senior High School level to pursue the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree course in the University. He noted that such graduates contribute to the development of the nation’s agricultural sector.

The Dean of the School of Agriculture, Professor John Ofosu-Anim enlightened the gathering on subject combinations and gave an indication of the expected aggregate that prospective candidates ought to obtain to qualify for admission into the School. He however emphasized that these requirements vary from year to year.

The various Heads of Departments took turns to make presentations on courses and entry requirements into their respective departments.

There were also motivational speeches from Dr. (Mrs.) Josephine Larbi-Appau, Chief Executive Officer of AAL-Global Consult Incorporated and Mr. George Brown of Reiss and Co., both alumni of School of Agriculture. There was time for questions during which issues were clarified on the various presentations. As part of the programme a poster exhibition and a tour of the School’s laboratories and farms were organised.

The maiden programme was well attended by 479 students drawn from 14 Senior High Schools and 12 teachers from various secondary schools in the country.
