The local NUGS President of the University of Ghana, Mr. Jacbo Akonde, has debunked rumours making rounds that the SRC of the University of Ghana has opted out of NUGS and USAG. Speaking on Radio Univers on Tuesday, Mr. Akonde stated emphatically the council was still a member of both associations and had no intention of revoking its membership.
He added the council will however not be going for the upcoming congress due to financial constraints, a situation that might have sparked the rumours.
According to him, certain situations that occurred at the last Central Committee meeting triggered representatives of the University walking out of the meeting but does not mean they are no long part of the associations.
“University of Ghana has no opted to get out of NUGS or USAG, University of Ghana is only not going for the USAG or NUGS congress because of financial problems” Mr. Akonde said.
It would be recalled that the last Central Committee meeting of the student association ended abruptly and inconclusively as some members especially those from the University of Ghana walked out of the meeting protesting the presence of some people they considered as ‘threats’ to the meeting.
Eric Edem Agbana, President of the SRC of University who claimed some members of the committee were armed with weapons at the meeting and even threatened a student of the University of Ghana was of the view the absence of University of Ghana from the congress would create some vaccum but added the other institutions were well able to fill it.
The University of Ghana Student Representative Council according to Mr. Agbana is in talks with stakeholders of the student association to ensure all the internal problems resulting mainly from the proposed amendments of the constitution are fully addressed.
