A level 200 student of the Department of Economics, Mr. Shafik Omar has won an international essay competition organized by africanliberty.org, a think tank based in Nigeria, and affiliated to Imani Ghana. For his prize, Mr. Omar received a cash prize of $1,000 and 50 books for the library of the Department of Economics.
The Director of Outreach for africanliberty.org, Mr. Adedayo Thomas and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ghana, Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah presented Mr. Omar with his prize at a short ceremony held at the Department of Economics.
Mr. Thomas noted that the competition is organized yearly and advertised through the internet, emails and posters. He encouraged other students of the university to take part in subsequent competitions and make their institution proud. He advised students to learn to become sound entrepreneurs rather than join the already choked labour market after school.
Mr. Omar said he entered the competition after he saw the advertisement on the Imani Ghana facebook page. He added that as part of the competition he was sponsored by the organization to travel to Kenya to attend the finals, where he took part in a conference on Free Markets, Capitalism and the Rule of Law.
The presentation ceremony took place in the conference room of the Department of Economics and was attended by Senior Members of the Department as well as students from the Departments of Economics and Political Science.
Congratulations to Mr. Omar. You have set an example for your peers and we wish you well.
