Prof. Yao Tettey elected President Of West African College of Physicians

Professor Yao Tettey, Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, has been elected and inducted into office as President of the West African College of Physicians. Prior to assumption of office as President, he had served as President-Elect for two years (2011 and 2012). Prof Tettey had also served in the following capacities: Secretary General of the College; Chief Examiner of the Faculty of Laboratory Medicine and Secretary of the Faculty of Laboratory Medicine at the Chapter and College levels.

 

The West African College of Physicians was established in 1976 as an association of medical specialists in Community Health, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Laboratory Medicine, Paediatrics and Psychiatry.

The College operates as Chapters in Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, The Republic of Benin, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The College is working to expand to all the ECOWAS countries.

The mission of the College is to improve the health of West Africans through excellence in training of medical specialists and the provision of high quality health care.

The objectives of the College are, to promote professional training of physicians; to promote the standards of professional practice, ethics and morals of physicians; to promote health and healthcare; to determine persons to be designated as specialist physicians after due consideration of their training, qualifications and experience; to advise and assist the governments of the sub region, the West African Health Organization and other relevant organizations on matters relating to training, healthcare and research in West Africa; to co-operate with appropriate bodies that encourage and provide facilities for the achievement of the objectives of the College, and to publish books, journals and other scientific materials as may be considered useful in support of these activities.

As President, Prof Tettey will preside at meetings of the College; sign all diplomas of membership and fellowship granted during his tenure of office; exercise general supervision over the affairs of the College and perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Council of the College.

Prof. Tettey’s tenure is for two years, 2013 and 2014. He assumed office on 1st January, 2013.
