Two students from the University of Ghana have received awards in the recently ended fifth edition of the Pan African University Debating Championship. The ceremony was held at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria under the theme, “Change and Conflict Environment”
Although this is the first time the University of Ghana, participated in the debating championship, it came out as the only West African University that received awards this year. The participants were accompanied by the Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mr. Joseph Budu and the Director of Sports, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah.
Mr. Antonio Edem Asinyo a level 300 student received two awards in the category of top five public speakers, and best speaker country while Ms Joyce Okyerewaa Danso, a level 200 student, received an award in the category of top five public speakers.
Mr. Antonio Edem Asinyo presented the awards to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, with some officials of the University present.
Receiving the award, Professor Aryeetey, congratulated the students and said the University of Ghana takes pride in their achievement, adding that the University will further explore ways of sharing in their achievements.
Mr. Asinyo, one of the award winners was optimistic that their achievements will help develop the debating culture of students of the University and further advance the University’s vision of attaining a world class status.
Also present at the presentation was the Pro Vice Chancellor (ORID) Professor John Gyapong, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences Professor Aaron N. L. Lawson, the Provost of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, Professor S. K. Offei, the Registrar, Mr. J.M. Budu and the Director of Finance, Mr. Richard Boapea.
