University of Ghana will from February 1, 2014 start charging road toll for all vehicles which use roads within the campus.
Private vehicles are to pay GHC 1 Ghana Cedi, taxi and commercial vehicles will pay GHC2 Cedis while heavy duty trucks will pay GHC3 Cedis at the University’s toll booth per entry.
In an interview with Citi News, the Director of Public Affairs at the University of University Mrs. Stella Amoah said the initiative was necessitated as a result of a GHC7 million Ghana Cedi loan the University acquired to rehabilitate and construct roads on campus.
‘’Last year the University came up with the information that the roads on campus were in a deplorable state and management decided to go for a loan in order to fix the roads; when the road construction started management also issued a circular informing members of the University community as well as the general public that once the road works are completed the University is going to charge fees.’’
According to Mrs. Amoah, members of the University community are expected to have a more internal management of the new toll collection.
“In the past all those who use cars on campus, whether they are students or staff were expected to register and if they are supposed be exempted they will be told so upon registration; if there is a subsidy for those who have to pay a subsidy they will pay, so it always have been what have characterized our road usage in so far as members of the community are concerned.’’
“So students know that for them to see a vehicle on campus, they are expected to pay something,’’ she noted.
Meanwhile the Students Representatives Council(SRC) of the school will meet on Friday to determine whether to accept the new policy or not.
