Univesity Of Ghana Business School Graduates its first Phd in Finance

Dr. Elikplimi Komla Agbloyor from the University of Ghana Business School last weekend graduated at the Congregation ceremony, becoming the first PhD graduand in Finance.

Dr. Agbloyor, obtaining his PhD at a relatively young age of 27, attended the Services Basic School at Burma Camp. He proceeded to the Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC, Legon) where he completed his secondary education in the year 2003. In the same year he was admitted into the University of Ghana to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration. In 2007, he graduated with a First Class honors majoring in Accounting. After his national service at the Business School, Dr. Agbloyor enrolled onto the MPhil in Finance.

Based on his performance, the MPhil programme was converted into a PhD programme after his first year of study. Dr. Agbloyor researched on Financial Markets and Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. The study found that financial market development promotes FDI flows in Africa. FDI flows also stimulate financial market development in Africa. Foreign private capital flows were found to spur economic growth in the presence of well-developed financial markets. The thesis was supervised by Prof. Joshua Abor (University of Ghana Business School), Prof. Charles Adjasi (University of Stellenbosch Business School, Cape Town) and Prof. Alfred Yawson (University of Adelaide Business School, Australia).
6565During his period of study, Dr. Agbloyor presented several papers in relation to his thesis at various conferences in countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Canada, Dubai and Ghana. Dr. Agbloyor received various awards during his period of study. At the 11th International Academy of African Business and Development Conference held in May 2010 in Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Agbloyor received a Best Paper Award (Graduate Track) for Financial Markets and Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. He also received a Best Presenter Award for Foreign Equity Portfolio Investment Flows and Economic Growth in Africa presented at the 12th International Academy of African Business and Development Conference held in May 2011 in Edmonton, Canada. At the 1st African Accounting and Finance Conference hosted by the University of Ghana in Accra in September 2011, Dr. Agbloyor received the Best Paper award in Finance for the paper Exploring the Causality Links between Financial Markets and Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. Dr. Agbloyor also got a paper, “Domestic Banking Sector Development and Cross Border Mergers and Acquisitions in Africa”, based on his PhD thesis published in the Review of Development Finance hosted by Elsevier.
