A third-year Statistics student of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic in the Upper East Region drowned in a swimming pool at the Tono Club House in the Kassena-Nankana East municipality on Friday (15th March, 2013).

The student, identified as Kweku Bayingme, was said to have accompanied some of his friends from the school to the club house to socialise as part of activities marking this year’s Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students Week.

An eyewitness account indicated that when Bayingme, a non-residential student of the polytechnic, arrived at the club house, he and some of his friends sat by the swimming pool and after a while dived into the deep part of the pool.

It said by the time the attention of the life guard on duty was drawn to Bayingme’s plight, he had drowned.

He was rushed to the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital where he was declared dead by medical officers on duty.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Bolgatanga Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The President of the Students Representative Council of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic, Mr Adama Muntala, told Graphic Online that he received calls from some of his mates that one of the students had drowned in a pool.

Meanwhile, the police in Navrongo have begun investigations into the case.
