The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has asked the government to expand infrastructure in all polytechnics across the nation.
GNUPS call is in line with government’s proposal to turn polytechnics into technical universities.
Though GNUPS lauded government’s vision, it doubted the feasibility of upgrading the polytechnics into technical universities with poor facilities.
GNUPS President, Apam William, is advocating for early engagements between the Conference of Rectors of Polytechnics and government, to make the proposal a reality.
Addressing the media in Accra, he complained about the deplorable status of polytechnics in the country which he said needed immediate attention.
“Infrastructure in the various polytechnics is very appalling; we are lacking equipment and all that it takes to train students.”
According to Apam William, successive governments have made several proposals and failed to implement it.
“Successive governments have since 1993 not paid attention to polytechnic education in Ghana, so our argument is that let’s take the right steps to correct these lapses.”
He decried the suffering polytechnics graduates have gone through over the years in the job market and pushed further for their upgrading to compete with their colleagues from the universities.
