The students of the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) held their third General Assembly (GA) sitting over the weekend at the Institute of Business Management and Journalism (IBM&J) in Kumasi.
The sitting was held to appraise the performance of the union and draw plans for the future. As part of the meeting, leaders from member institutions were required to render account of their stewardship for the past year.
In the Keynote address delivered by the President of the Union, Paa Kwesi Adu, he stated his commitment to drawing government’s attention to the numerous challenges students in private institutions in the country have to battle with every day. Among the challenges, he singled out lack of government subvention of fees paid by students of private institutes in the country just as its being done for students in public universities.
According to Mr. Adu, graduates from private institutes render national service to the country just as their colleagues from public institutions, therefore the current situation where government subsidizes the fees of student in public sector up to 70% is highly unfair.
