Maths Department lifts UMaT Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Cup

The Mathematics Department of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) won the UMaT Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Cup over the weekend when they defeated a select side of Senior Members and Senior Staff by 5-4 on penalties in the grand finale of a two day football fiesta.

For their prize, the Mathematics Department received a giant trophy and a cash reward of GH¢ 1,000.00 whilst the Staff select side also received an amount of GH¢ 600 for placing second.

On their way to the finals of the competition, the winners accounted for the Department of Petroleum by 4-0 goals in a penalty shootout in the preliminary round whilst they beat the Department of Computer Science and Engineering by 2-0 at the next stage of the competition before edging out the staff select side also on penalties to lift the trophy.

The event, which was sponsored by Access Bank with support from Fidelity Bank, saw 12 participating teams including 10 academic departments and two staff unions competing for honours. The competition was aimed at promoting social integration and the health of members of the academic community through sports and exercise.

Presenting the trophy to the wining team, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma, Vice chancellor congratulated Department of Mathematics for their sportsmanship and perseverance in lifting the Cup and wished the other teams better luck next time.

Mr Robertson Afful, the Head of Cluster of Access Bank in charge of Northern Sector expressed the commitment of his outfit to continue to support such events as part of their CSR and lauded the University for organising the competition.
