Sunyani Poly students riot over alleged misappropriation of SRC fund

Students of the Sunyani Polytechnic in the Brong Ahafo Region have accused the President of Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Mr Gordon Appiah, of embezzling funds.

As a result about 1,000 students on Monday rioted on campus shouting and calling for the school authorities to release the SRC President to them.

Some of them were reported to have pelted stones at the President and the security men until the SRC President was rushed to one of the offices to prevent the irate students from lynching him.

The students besieged the SRC hostels demanding to lynch the rest of the SRC executives who had already taken shelter there.

Traffic on the main road dividing the polytechnic and their SRC hostels came to a standstill as the students occupied it.

Some of them called for the resignation of the SRC President.

Misappropriation of SRC funds

Some students who spoke to Graphic Online said the SRC President had used part of the SRC’s funds to buy a Pontiac Vibe vehicle and had invested part of the money in banks.

They alleged that Mr Appiah had squandered the SRC’s hotels fees which had led to power cut to the SRC’s hostels.

They said the Volta River Authority (VRA) on Monday cut power supply to their hostels due to their indebtedness of GH¢9,000.

According to them, they had all paid their hostel fees and therefore do not see the reason why their power supply should be cut.

The students alleged that Mr Appiah claimed he had settled a debt of GH¢200,000 left by his predecessor but the past SRC President had denied having left any debt before leaving office.

When contacted, the Public Affairs Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Kwamena Amponsah said it was a matter between the students and the SRC leadership and that it had not come to the school’s authority officially.
