There is always opposition in every administration. Others serve not necessarily as oppositions but as vigilante groups, thus watch keenly what goes on and report for the benefit of students.
I am not an opposing force to the current administration or against any of the leaders of this noble University for Development Studies (UDS). I only believe in the “done well” theory that says “If it must be done, then it must be done well”.
This article contains over 600 words; but indeed, a must read. Just in case you found yourself outside campus yesterday (Wednesday, 7th May 2014), either because you were caught up in a busy schedule or on vacation, then your decision to sacrifice the handing over ceremony paid huge dividends.
On the other side of the coin, fans and sympathizers of the current SRC administration will attack and criticize me by saying social media is not the best medium for dissemination of information of this kind, but I ask, how will students to whom our leaders have sworn oaths of accountability know how their pennies are being used?
The organizers and the master of ceremony (M.C) of the SRC Handing Over, being students who aspire to achieve more in handling events of this kind could not capitalize on the flaws of the various associations on campus, during events like dinner, and parties, of which problems like; late commencement, inconsistency in flow of programme due to unavailability of structured programme outline, wrong methods and sense of timing for the sharing of highly anticipated “item 13” and also distasteful refreshment, but amazingly treaded on the same path and did horribly abysmal.
Major highlights included SRC Executives and deserving Council Members receiving citations for their dedication to tireless service. To my surprise, SRC Executives received the same award in the form of plaques which were awarded to distinguished lecturers present of which Professors, Doctors and Honourables were part.
The much hyped handing over ceremony was attended by a “swarm” of final year students some of which have never participated in events of this kind. Why were they in attendance? Was it to cheer the incoming executives? To share the memorable day with outgoing executives? To be eye witnesses like myself? Or for the rumored over thousands of cedis budgeted item 13? Your guess is as good as mine.
It is pathetic to note that “common water” was not served during the event which led to screams and murmuring from dehydrating participants. You can guess the reactions under the intense weather condition of the school’s lecture hall which had all air-conditioners switched off.
Murmurings became even louder when water was served to carefully chosen few. Again, you had better not come. The attendees were left to their dismay after the closing prayer was said by the Speaker of General Assembly and refreshment time announced by the M.C. The eagerly anticipated moment turned into ‘chaos’, limited quantity of malt and biscuits was served.
The agitated attendees longing to satisfy their appetite after long hours of salivation ended up scrambling for the limited item 13. This led to the spillage of drink on lecture benches, dresses and documents of some attendees.
If you are wondering what the rest of the budgeted refreshment will be used for, then your guess is definitely as good as mine.
Why did I attribute the flop to the M.C and organizers? The M.C. is the one responsible for the total success of the programme hence needs to liaise with event organizers to plan and execute the programme. I may be advertising, but next time you want to M.C. any event, read “How To M.C. Any Event by KafuiDey”.
The Organizers on the other hand, should have also provided the necessary conditions for the M.C. to perform. I will not advertise further but polish it up because it can only be pardonable in some organizations. The newly sworn-in SRC Executives are eye witnesses to the flaws of the current administration hence duty demands them to fix these anomalies especially those that go contrary to the Constitution of the Institution.
Let’s all join hands to make U.D.S. a more conducive place of study and entertainment. Keep watch, because I am awake.
