The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education (UEW), Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, has said the University is committed to the training of high quality and well behaved professionals to ensure quality education.
Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said this at the matriculation of 5,860 students who would be undertaking Degree, Diploma and Certificate courses at the Winneba and Ajumako Campuses for the 2014/2015 academic year.
He said 10,292 students applied for the courses but 5,860 were admitted due to limited resources.
Prof Asabere-Ameyaw expressed contentment that admissions into the regular programmes of the University had increased by more than 100 percent over the years.
He said this should enable the University to fill the teacher shortfall in the schools.
“Let us note that the UEW is the only University in Ghana that is totally committed to the development of human resource needs of the educational set-up and this administration is religiously committed to that,” he said.
Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said a total of 1,030 applications were received for the Postgraduate programmes but 506 were offered admission, while 255 registered.
He said the University needed to improve and expand the facilities as it made conscious efforts at replacing the antiquated equipment inherited from diploma awarding institutions established well over half a century ago.
“These facilities obviously cannot adequately help to train competent teachers who can comfortably face the challenges of the 21st century classroom,” he said.
He, therefore, appealed to the government and all who desired quality teaching in the schools to go to their aid.
However, Prof Asabre-Ameyaw stated that regardless of the present challenges, the UEW ranked among the best on the African continent.
The Registrar of the University, Dr C. Y. Acquah, administered the Matriculation oath to the students.
