The women hockey team of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) won bronze medal at the 4th West Africa University Games (WAUG) organised at the University of Nigeria, Nsuka, from October 19 to October 25, 2015.
The games attracted 26 universities across West Africa.
In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, welcomed athletes and guests to the University, stating that the idea to host the games is based on the University’s philosophy of restoring the dignity of man.
The games started with a football match between the host university (UNN) and the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The UNN team won the opening game by a lone goal against their opponents, OAU. However, it was the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) team who took the shine in the male football category. The ESUT team beat the host (UNN) 4-3 on penalties in a controversial semi-final match, then went ahead to beat University of Calabar (UNICAL) in the final match.

Federal University of Technology, Minna (FutMinna) – Male Hockey Bronze Trophy Winners.
The WAUG Games are aimed at fostering greater friendship among youths of the West African sub-region in addition to providing an opportunity for West African universities to contribute to the development of highly skilled elite athletes among their students as done by Universities all over the world.
At present, fourteen (14) West African countries are active members of WAUG, represented by about 60 universities. Only Cape Verde, Gambia and Mauritania are not represented yet in WAUG. So, literarily the WAUG Games can be called the ECOWAS Students Games.
