The Ghana Health Service has approved the designation of Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region as an affiliate Teaching Hospital to the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS).
Owing to the low bed capacity of the Cape Coast Regional Hospital, admission of students has been restricted to fifty (50) students annually in order to conform to the standards set by the National Accreditation Board and the Medical and Dental Council. With this development UCCSMS can increase the number of admission of fresh students from 50 to 100 students.
The management of UCC in pursuance of the vision of contributing to the improvement of the poor doctor to patient ratio in the country is determined to increase the intake of students to the UCCSMS without compromising on standards. With the designation of Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, UCCSMS can provide the critical clinical training to the envisaged increased number of medical students in addition to that of the Cape Coast Regional Hospital.
