The United Nations of Ghana (UN) in partnership with the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has held a forum to mark the 2012 International Youth Day and World Humanitarian Day.
The celebration was on the theme “”Building a Better World: Partnering with Youth.”
Speaking at the forum, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Ghana, Ms. Cynthia Prah, indicated that the “2012 International Youth Day is a global call to action for young men and women as well as other stakeholders around the world to develop and engage in partnerships with the youth towards building a better world.”
Ms. Prah, explained that the UN systems in Ghana engaged the services of the UCCSMS students to raise awareness of humanitarian assistance and also expose them to opportunities within which they can contribute towards building a better world. She noted that the event would provide an opportunity for the United Nations and other organisations to strengthen mechanisms for partnerships and also inculcate in the youth the passion of humanitarian with young people.
The Dean of UCCSMS, Prof. Amonoo Kuofie expressed gratitude to the UN office for engaging the services of the School in their outreach programmes. He gave the assurance that the School would always open its doors to such laudable interventions whenever their services were needed.
As part of activities to commemorate these two important days, the UN officials sponsored a health screening exercise at Egyeikrom in the Central Region. Medical Students from UCC and the Ghana Health Service screened the residents on various ailments such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, malaria and also carried general medical assessment of children.
