A second-year medical student of the University of Cape Coast’s School of Medical Sciences was last Saturday sodomised at knife point by an intruder at the PSI Hostel.
The intruder was said to have sneaked into the victim’s room between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m last Saturday, May 11, 2013.
Information gathered by the Daily Graphic indicated that the victim was in her room sleeping when she was tapped by the unidentified intruder.
He then picked a knife in the room and ordered her to lie prostrate after which he sodomised her. He then bolted with her IPAD and mobile phone.
No arrest has been made yet.
When contacted, the Central Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Mr George Appiah-Sakyi, said a medical report on the victim indicated that there had been penetration through the anus.
Mr Appiah-Sakyi said though some of the hostel mates had confirmed that the victim screamed once to their hearing, they ignored the scream and failed to check on her.
He added that the police was investigating the issue and expressed the hope that with the cooperation of the victim, the suspect would be arrested.
The incident has sent shivers down the spine of many of the medical students in the university.
Last Friday, May 17, 2013, the students, some of whom wore red armbands to indicate their displeasure, held a protest march around the hostel, protesting what they said was the lax security on campus.
Some of them said the security issue had been raised with the authorities of the university for a long time but not much had been done and added that many students had been robbed because of the poor security in and around the hostels.
