Student leaders at the University of Cape Coast have expressed happiness at the strenuous efforts being made by the authorities to improve facilities on campus.
This efforts according to the students was “an indication that management has paid heed to their concerns to deliver on their promise”.
The students had complained lately that they were not “getting value for money on fees paid to the university”.
The President of Graduate Students Association Ghana (GRASSAG), and Students Representative Council(SRC), UCC, Mr. Paul Ofori Amanfo and Mr. David Boakye, respectively shared these sentiments after an inspection tour of some projects sites at the university. Mr. Paul Ofori Amanfo intimated that it was his expectation that work would be completed before students return to campus whilst his SRC counterpart, David Boakye congratulated management for acting expeditiously on students concerns and therefor, expressed gratitude to them.
At the Assembly hall, an engineer at the Directorate of Physical, Development and Estate Management of the university, Mr. George Sackey who conducted the team round, said work on the tiling of the floor was about 60% complete and would be completed in a week’s time while polishing of the terrazzo floors at the dining hall, large lecture theatre and the Old Library respectively had reach an advanced stage.
He said the refurbishing all the lecture halls would include replacement of furniture and lighting systems and sprucing up of washrooms. Mr. Sackey pointed out that the university had procured 20 over-head projectors to be installed at the various lecture theatres to enhance teaching and learning.
At the University Sports grounds, work was going on steadily to re-grass the football and hockey pitches as well as construction of new basket ball and hand ball courts. The athletic oval is also being replaced.
The team also visited the site for the construction of a new two storey building which would accommodate ATL FM and a television station. It will also include offices for the SRC and GRASAG.
