Please find below, a press release by the Alliance for Accountable Leadership (AFAL-KNUST). AFAL is a pressure group advocating for transparency, probity, and accountability in student leadership.
The release:
In view of the recent turn of events and evidence at our disposal, we suspect corruption at the Student Representative Council (SRC-KNUST). As such we question the level of transparency and accountability of the SRC to the student body of this noble university. In terms of how monies from some components of the school fees namely: the SRC Endowment Fund and the SRC Constitution were collected and disbursed.
With the issue of the SRC Endowment Fund, we humbly request that the SRC should come clear and publish the names of the beneficiaries so far, the amount which has been spent and what is left in the SRC coffers. Attached to the published details should be a statement of account to that respect. Nonetheless, we question the essence of the SRC Endowment Fund because it is to provide welfare support to students who have lost their parents and can no longer afford their school fees which are the same things the Welfare Fund, the KBN and other scholarship schemes do.As such it isaduplication in order to siphon funds from the student body.
Also, it is worth mentioning that an amount of GHȼ2.00 was charged from each freshmanas per the levy for an SRC Constitution. As at now nothing of such has been provided to the fresher’s. Upon a thorough investigation, we discovered that for the past three (3) years monies are always collected to provide an SRC Constitution for freshmen but in effect nothing is always given.
We therefore humbly appeal that the Fugah Caleb led administration should come clear and explain the reasons behind these to the over 40,000 students of KNUST whowere levied in either one or both of the above stated.
Signed: Alagskomah Eugene Savio (Leader AFAL-KNUST)
