It is really amazing to know that students of Ghana’s premier science and technology university, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), suffer from bad mobile network quality on campus.
KNUST students have been complaining of the abysmal mobile networks quality within the university for so long now.
In this age of advanced information technology, students have taken the opportunity to use technology to their advantage to discuss assignments, group works and the likes via WhatsApp and social networks. Unfortunately, the really poor mobile network reception at the university makes like difficult for these students.
It is difficult for students of KNUST to browse, call, or even text due to the poor mobile network quality on campus. The problem is not with a particular mobile telecom provider but virtually all of them (although there is a most terrible one. We don’t have to mention it, their name is already known).
You want to take and share ‘selfies’ online? Forget!
The problem is even worse for residents of the Chancellor’s Hall (popularly known as Hall 7). It takes several minutes and sometimes hours for a simple WhatsApp message to be sent or received. For internet connectivity, there is nothing like 4G or 3G within the hostel which is situated at the heart of KNUST, you have to thank your stars when you get even 2G.
As for the campus Wi-fi powered by the University Information Technology Services (UITS) of the university, the less we write about it, the better. Getting the signal is just the genesis of the problems, ability to be connected follows…do you really want a comment on the internet speed? like seriously??? Let’s deal with the mobile networks for now…there is hope there.
We would like to call on the students’ leadership body and the university authorities to do more in solving the problems with mobile networks connectivity and the campus Wi-fi (in terms of quality and coverage) since these problems are hindering the advancement of students’ academic works and I.T. entrepreneurial skills development.
New mobile telecom masts have been seen on campus but the reception is still not the best. We would like to also call on all mobile telecommunication companies to do more for students. If information communication technology (ICT) matters to the development of Ghana…KNUST matters.
