The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its week-old strike. This follows government’s assurance of paying their 2014/2015 book and research allowances.

UTAG declared a strike on Wednesday over the non-payment of their 2014/2015 book and research allowance. Several calls from various quarters particularly from student groups urged the association to rescind its decision but its President Mr. Samuel Berkoe had said it will only call of the strike if government pays the full arrears.

The Association’s decision to end the strike was taken at an emergency meeting on Thursday, August 13,2015.

President of the UTAG, Dr. Samuel Berkoe in an interview with Univers News stated that although government had not paid the allowances yet, it had met their “benchmarks”, which was an enough indication of its (government) commitment to pay the arrears.

He however noted that members of the Association will lay down their tools if government does not pay the amount in full by the end of September 2015.
