NUGS PLEDGES SUPPORT TO UPHOLD PEACE IN GHANA AS WE AWAIT SUPREME COURT’S VERDICT
The Leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) with the interest of Ghana students at heart wishes to pledge our fervent support to help promote peace and a calm environment for the vulnerable women and children, as well as the dependant youth as we all await the verdict of the Supreme Court.
We pledge our support to eternally protect Ghana’s reputation at this crucial moment knowing that ‘Ghana is bigger than our political parties’. We have reached a certain stage of our nation’s destiny where our enviable democracy has been put to its strongest test. However, this is serving as an opportunity to prove to the whole world that Ghana is a fortress of democracy and our guiding light is freedom and justice. Hence, NUGS as a non-partisan, non-religious advocacy group for Ghanaian students and a stakeholder of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is committed to sensitizing and educating Ghana students as well as the youth towards maintaining peace and unity after the verdict of the Supreme Court in order to continue enjoying our right to education.
By this statement, the leadership of NUGS in solidarity with NEC, Central Committee and our member institutions is pleading with Party spokespersons or communicators, the Media, National Peace Council, National House of Chiefs, Security Services, the clergy, party supporters, the youth and Ghana students to be very circumspect and vigilant in their speech and desist from any act of violence or chaos at this crucial moment of Ghana. We further urge all Ghanaians not to forget Ghana in prayers as we approach this crux moment.
NUGS is also charging Nana Addo-Dankwah Akuffo Addo and the leadership of the NPP as well as President John Dramani Mahama and the leadership of the NDC and all party supporters to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court on the 2012 election petition in good faith for the sake of peace and unity among Ghanaians because ‘Ghana’s interest is greater than our political interest’.
Signed

Louisa Atta-Agyeman (NUGS General Secretary)
