The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has condemned the politicization of the ongoing market infernos.
The Polytechnic students body condemnation comes at a time some leading members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the governing National Democratic Congress are playing the blame game on the bizarre circumstances.
GNUPS has hence challenged all well meaning Ghanaians to consider the heartbroken market firestorms as a national tragedy and decouple politics from it.
GNUPS Public Relations Officer, Atariwini Andrew in an interview with Citi News, bemoaned: “We are unhappy about the politicization of the situation; we think that this is a national tragedy, which should be tackled with all sense of patriotism, and people should not attempt to score political points with it.”
He called on all stakeholders especially government, to curtail the phenomenon and take steps to alleviate the plight of victims who have so far been rendered bankrupt.
Atariwini Andrew further impressed upon the investigative bodies, to make public their findings and punish those found culpable.
“We were told investigations had been conducted on similar disasters in the recent past and nothing has come out of the said investigations.”
He lamented, “Up till now we don’t have such reports out as indicating that this is what is the cause of the problem yet we are trying to politicize it by chastising each other and not looking for the way forward.”
With the Kumasi central market being the latest on Sunday where three people including a 78-year-old grand mum lost their lives, several major markets in the Accra Metropolis including Makola number 1 and 2, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto and Madina have been gutted by fire.
Victims are still counting their losses, and no assigned reasons have been established by national security operatives.
